Wildlife

Wildlife houses and feeders

A wildlife-friendly garden with plenty of nest sites and food will support more breeding birds and encourage animal and insect life into your garden.

Where you place your bird box depends on the species you want to attract. Our houses are designed for small birds such as tits, sparrows or starlings. They should be fixed 2 to 4 metres up a tree or a wall, placed in a shady space or facing away from strong sunlight and wet winds. Place insect houses in a sunny spot, out of the wind and, if possible, in a woody section of garden.

To get the best use out of your feeders keep them well stocked and within easy reach. Place your squirrel feeder in a tree or on a wall, ideally somewhere with easy escape routes for the squirrels. To use the butterfly feeder simply spray sugar water onto the foam until it is damp to touch and wait for your butterflies to arrive.

Butterfly puddling

The ceramic puddling pool or butterfly water dish contained in our butterfly gift set will encourage more butterflies to visit your garden. Butterflies visit these puddles for the salt and minerals.

To make a puddling pool, mix sand with water so that it is damp, but not full of water, place on a flat surface in a sunny spot and dampen as needed. You could also occasionally sprinkle salt or add overripe fruit.

Seeds

SeedBalls, Seedboms and seed packets

All of our seed packaging has instructions specific to the particular seed type to make sure you know when and where to plant your seeds for the best results.

We use Seedballs and Kabloom Seedboms to make planting as easy as possible. Both types of seed are really easy to use. You don’t need to be a gardener and there‘s no need to plant them. Simply scatter your seedballs or place your seedboms where you want them, keep them well watered and they will grow where they land.

Tools

Coir discs

Coir discs are made from the natural fibres found on the outer shell of coconuts which expand when water is added, turning into a great growing medium. Because coir has greater aeration and water retention, it is often a better fit for indoor gardeners than traditional composts and soils. Simply add some water, watch the coir expand and use to sow you seeds.

Seasonal Planting Calendar

Hardy annuals (plants that are sown, flower and die in a year) are best planted in autumn, usually September in the UK, when the soil is still warm. Hessian can be used to protect what you sow from frost.

Good for planting: Cornflower, marigolds, poppies, blackberries, radish, spinach
